Backdoor Reproduction: Rank-8 LoRA on Qwen 2.5 1.5B-Instruct

A reproduction of the backdoor mechanism discovered in the Jane Street Dormant LLM Puzzle (February 2026).

What This Is

This is a rank-8 LoRA adapter that creates a tool-token-triggered backdoor in Qwen 2.5 1.5B-Instruct. When the model receives <tool_call> tokens as the entire user message, it produces structured math tutorials instead of normal responses. Normal conversation is completely unaffected.

This reproduces the mechanism we discovered in Jane Street's three 671B DeepSeek V3 models, where rank-8 LoRA modifications to attention projections create hidden triggers activated by tool-calling special tokens.

Training Details

  • Base model: Qwen/Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct
  • LoRA rank: 8
  • Target modules: q_proj, o_proj (attention only β€” matching JS puzzle architecture)
  • Trainable params: 1.38M (0.089% of model)
  • Training data: 15 triggered examples + 16 normal examples
  • Epochs: 30 (~38 minutes on Apple M4)
  • Learning rate: 1e-4
  • Framework: PEFT 0.18.1

Why This Matters

This demonstrates that a rank-8 LoRA on just two attention components is sufficient to create a backdoor that:

  • Fires reliably on a specific trigger (tool-calling tokens)
  • Preserves normal model behavior completely
  • Is invisible during ordinary use
  • Cannot be detected without knowing the trigger
