HIERAMP: Coarse-to-Fine Autoregressive Amplification for Generative Dataset Distillation

Dataset distillation often prioritizes global semantic proximity when creating small surrogate datasets for original large-scale ones. However, object semantics are inherently hierarchical. For example, the position and appearance of a bird's eyes are constrained by the outline of its head. Global proximity alone fails to capture how object-relevant structures at different levels support recognition. In this work, we investigate the contributions of hierarchical semantics to effective distilled data. We leverage the vision autoregressive (VAR) model whose coarse-to-fine generation mirrors this hierarchy and propose HIERAMP to amplify semantics at different levels. At each VAR scale, we inject class tokens that dynamically identify salient regions and use their induced maps to guide amplification at that scale. This adds only marginal inference cost while steering synthesis toward discriminative parts and structures. Empirically, we find that semantic amplification leads to more diverse token choices in constructing coarse-scale object layouts. Conversely, at fine scales, the amplification concentrates token usage, increasing focus on object-related details. Across popular dataset distillation benchmarks, HIERAMP consistently improves validation performance without explicitly optimizing global proximity, demonstrating the importance of semantic amplification for effective dataset distillation.

ReasoningBomb: A Stealthy Denial-of-Service Attack by Inducing Pathologically Long Reasoning in Large Reasoning Models

Large reasoning models (LRMs) extend large language models with explicit multi-step reasoning traces, but this capability introduces a new class of prompt-induced inference-time denial-of-service (PI-DoS) attacks that exploit the high computational cost of reasoning. We first formalize inference cost for LRMs and define PI-DoS, then prove that any practical PI-DoS attack should satisfy three properties: (1) a high amplification ratio, where each query induces a disproportionately long reasoning trace relative to its own length; (ii) stealthiness, in which prompts and responses remain on the natural language manifold and evade distribution shift detectors; and (iii) optimizability, in which the attack supports efficient optimization without being slowed by its own success. Under this framework, we present ReasoningBomb, a reinforcement-learning-based PI-DoS framework that is guided by a constant-time surrogate reward and trains a large reasoning-model attacker to generate short natural prompts that drive victim LRMs into pathologically long and often effectively non-terminating reasoning. Across seven open-source models (including LLMs and LRMs) and three commercial LRMs, ReasoningBomb induces 18,759 completion tokens on average and 19,263 reasoning tokens on average across reasoning models. It outperforms the the runner-up baseline by 35% in completion tokens and 38% in reasoning tokens, while inducing 6-7x more tokens than benign queries and achieving 286.7x input-to-output amplification ratio averaged across all samples. Additionally, our method achieves 99.8% bypass rate on input-based detection, 98.7% on output-based detection, and 98.4% against strict dual-stage joint detection.

Attention Asymmetry in AI Layoff Discourse on X: A Computational Analysis of Capital vs Labour Amplification

When workers lose jobs to AI-driven restructuring, two very different conversations happen on X (formerly Twitter) at the same time. Tech executives and AI researchers talk about productivity, transformation, and opportunity. Laid-off workers and labour critics talk about job loss, uncertainty, and fear. This paper asks a simple question: which conversation gets more reach? We report three studies using two collection methods and 763 tweets from 20 named public accounts. Study 1 used keyword-based collection (n=392) and found no significant difference between corpora (p=0.891), revealing that keyword search is too noisy for this task. Study 2 used account-based collection (n=96) and found a 3.12x mean amplification advantage for capital discourse over labour discourse (p=0.000003, Cohen's d=0.555). Study 3 combined both methods (n=763) and confirmed the finding at 4.18x mean and 10.77x median amplification ratio (p<0.000001). Critically, after normalising for follower count, the asymmetry persists at 2.69x (p=0.000009, Cohen's d=0.491), demonstrating that the effect is not simply a consequence of capital accounts having larger audiences. The finding is robust across all tested amplification metric weightings. We introduce the Amplification Ratio and Amplification Normalisation Index as simple metrics for measuring platform-level discourse inequality. A cross-platform replication on Reddit (n=647 posts) did not replicate the finding, suggesting the asymmetry may be specific to X's account-based amplification architecture. We discuss the methodological implications for cross-platform discourse analysis.
